Introduction

Brac island is becoming increasingly popular for active outdoor tourism, and whilst there seem to be many cycling guides outlining the routes available, hiking and walking trails are not clearly signposted and it's difficult to find information about them, whether online or on location.

My family owns a house on the island near the Olive Trek trail, and every day during the summer season there are tourists on foot, ATVs/quads or bikes getting lost and asking for directions and in some cases for shelter, water or supplies due to inadequate equipment or planning.

Local council and tourist board are mostly hands-off with the path and hikers, besides basic maintenance of existing signage. The website only mentions the Olive Trek but provides no information on how to get there, what’s there to see and do or information on the conditions. The Visitor centre (located in the port) hands out the maps showing the trails (if people go inside to ask for them).

User Journey

Scenario: Claire and her husband John have booked a holiday in Croatia and are amateur trekkers/walkers looking for a relaxing escape to nature.

Their steps would be:

  1. Research online - They explore local area online, find blogs and guides to hiking on the island; visits official tourist info website; look up inspiration on Instagram
  2. Pack appropriate clothing and equipment - what’s the climate like?
  3. Book flights and accommodation - Drives to Airport, checks in and flies to X airport in Croatia
  4. Arrive - Taxi to the AirB&B/hotel (are there printed maps of the area or a welcome pack? Physical or digital) - how do they find the local hiking trail?
  5. Hike Day - Gets up, eats, packs a bag with food and water At this point they need to find the start and then follow the route, what do they need to do before they set off? How do they find this info?
